Ural Australia Newsletter July 2013

June Adventure Ride with the Russians
In June 2013 Ural Australia had a
group of six Russians, from the
Vladivostok and Khabarovsk area in
Siberia, come to Australia to ride Ural
outfits to “The Outback”.
They hired three Ural of Oz sidecars
and rode a loop from Kentucky to
Innamincka and the Flinders Ranges
before returning. The word went out
and eight local Ural riders joined in the
run over 4,000kms in twelve days.
The local Urals were ready to be selfsufficient
on the trip, and UA (Ural Australia) followed with a ute and trailer carrying food, cooking gear, camping gear, extra fuel, tyres etc. We took a trailer in case there was a problem in a remote area.

The target was to ride just 300kms a day with plenty of time for stops and chat. Days
were short and it was cold in the rain that first day, however, we hammered on to Bourke in sunny weather the next day. A near miss with an emu, which raced between two bikes and hit an oncoming truck, made our visitors aware of our wildlife. Vadim was appointed Emu Policeman and from his up front riding position he would watch for emus in the vicinity and attempt to
frighten them away to the amusement of our Aussies.

Wet roads forced us to follow tar as far as Cunnamulla and Thargomindah before getting into the dirt and sand around the coopers Creek. We chose remote, narrow and little used roads where
possible. Riding the outfits on these often sandy roads was a delight and noone tired of rolling along between and over the sandhills with the odd sandy crossing to keep it challenging.
We had one rider take a tumble when he miscued on a corner and left the road. This put him out of action with an ambo ride, and his bike was loaded onto the trailer.

The desert camping was a lot of fun and if the rain had not come back in the last four
days we would have camped all the rest of the way! We enjoyed the roads through the
scenic Flinders Ranges. Earlier rain had left some boggy patches on the roads east of
the Flinders, and then some new showers
made the smooth roads very slippery. It’s
all good fun with a sidecar, although the
low mounted Retro model’s front
mudguard made front wheel ‘mud
clogging’ an issue in the claggy stuff!
Our trip with eight local Urals and three of
our hire Urals demonstrated the carrying
capacity of these bikes, and there were no
breakdowns, failures or punctures at all. A
common interest among the group, and a
desire for travel adventure wherever it can
be found ensured a strong group atmosphere enjoyed by all.

KIRTSY 2013 will depart Adelaide late in the afternoon of Sunday the 8th of September for a gentle 5 day ride around Kangaroo island, returning to Australia on the following Friday ferry.
The ride will be a bit different from KIRSTY 2012 with different accommodation, some
new sights and different roads (as much as is possible on KI).

Email Graham at gmjm@internode.on.net as soon as possible if you want to be involved as they have already started booking accommodation etc.

It will be a fun trip, they don’t do big distances and long days. Total distance on the Island will be around 600km so there'll be plenty of time for socialising and sightseeing.

The Yamal Limited Edition model has arrived!
This year's special edition Ural outfit has been named the Yamal after Russia's famous
icebreaker. It features bright orange colouring with bared teeth on the sidecar body, a
doubly reinforced rubberised sidecar
underbelly, additional foglights and an oar
for extricating oneself from those difficult
situations. All of our Australian Yamals
were sold before they left the ship and
they have spread themselves across
Australia and New Zealand, including
Melbourne, Sydney, Christchurch and one
will be roosting near Ural Australia HQ.

Keep an eye out for the flashing teeth of
your nearest Yamal!

Upcoming Annual Ural Adventure Ride.
Our Annual Ural Adventure Ride will take place a little later this year on October 18th
to 20th.

It will begin with a meet up in Tamworth on Friday morning from where we will take
a 190 km ride through the mountain tracks to finish up at Kentucky. The Huts
accommodation is available and bookings will be on a first in basis.
Saturday will be a short ride to Uralla where Graham will give a technical session on
the inner machinations of the Ural final drive as well as some question and answer
sessions. Saturday night there are plans for a barbecue and bonfire.
Sunday there will be a fun event including an observation trial on the farm.

Please advise your interest so we can send you information in more detail. Last year we had
25 Urals for the October event. This should be a low cost rally with plenty of time to enjoy the
company, our great bush roads and to learn more about Ural sidecar riding.
